Your Jordan tour package begins with a drive to visit Jerash, the best example of a Roman provincial city in the whole Middle East. You will visit Hadrian's Arch, the Hippodrome, the Colonnaded Street, the Cathedral, the Jerash Archaeological Museum, the North Theatre, and the South Theatre.
We will then continue to As Salt, the most historic town in Jordan. For long periods in history, it was the most important settlement between the Jordan River and the desert to the east. Its golden age was at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, and it is the legacy of this period that makes Salt unique in Jordan and beyond. You'll walk through the old town's winding streets, stopping to see examples of traditional architecture and crafts, as well as the As Salt Archaeological Museum. You will have the opportunity to visit local shops and markets. In the late afternoon, we travel back to your hotel in Amman. (Breakfast included)
Today, we embark on a city tour of Amman, Jordan's capital, a safe, friendly, and modern city. The old city is dominated by the ancient Citadel, home to the Byzantine Church, the Temple of Hercules, and the Umayyad Palace. Amman was known in the Old Testament as Rabbath Ammon and, during Greco-Roman times, as Philadelphia. You will visit the Roman Amphitheater, the Archaeological Museum, the Jordan Folklore Museum, and the Citadel, including the Byzantine Church, the Temple of Hercules, and the Umayyad Palace complex.
Visit Amman's downtown market and city center, including its traditional souks, coffee shops, restaurants serving local food and sweets, churches, mosques, and other popular attractions. Then drive to the other side of the city, where you can admire the beautiful white-stone houses of the upscale Abdoun district. We then visit Rainbow Street, a major attraction in old Amman. The capital's finest souks, museums, ancient buildings, monuments, and cultural sites are located in Jabal Amman.
Afterward, we continue our journey with a visit to the Jordanian Desert Castles, including Amra Castle with its zodiac dome adorned with some of the earliest examples of Umayyad fresco paintings, the fortress-like and mysterious Qasr Kharanah, and the black basalt Roman and Medieval Islamic fort at Azraq. Transfer back to your hotel in Amman. (Breakfast included)
This morning, we begin with Madaba, where St. George's Greek Orthodox Church is home to a famous floor mosaic. Created during the 6th century AD, the mosaic depicts the pilgrimage routes from the surrounding regions to the Holy Land.
Your next visit recalls the story of Moses and his journey to the Promised Land. At Mount Nebo, there is a memorial for Musa (Moses) and a 4th century church, which Italian Franciscan priests excavated and restored in 1933. The panoramic view overlooks the Jordan River Valley, the Dead Sea, Jericho, and Jerusalem.
We then continue to your hotel overlooking the Dead Sea, the lowest point on Earth (1,373 ft. below sea level) and the world's largest natural spa. Enjoy the breathtaking views, float in the mineral-rich waters, experience a rejuvenating Dead Sea mud bath, or take advantage of the hotel's spa facilities. Spa treatments are available but are not included in your tour price. (Breakfast included)
After breakfast, we start our journey south to Petra. The first stop along the way is Um Al-Rassas. The site contains ruins from the Roman, Byzantine, and early Islamic periods, dating from the end of the 3rd century AD to the 9th century. It also features the remains of a fortified Roman army camp and two square towers that were used by early Christian monks seeking solitude. Due to its archaeological and cultural significance, UNESCO designated Um Al-Rassas as Jordan's third World Heritage Site in 2004.
Thereafter, we continue to Kerak, the ancient biblical capital of the Moabites, which is mentioned several times in the Bible. Kerak is best known for its famous Crusader Castle, built in 1132–1134 AD by King Baldwin I of Jerusalem. Explore the castle, its impressive underground halls, and the castle museum. We then transfer to Petra, with time to settle into your hotel. (Breakfast & dinner included)
Tonight, you will enjoy the magic of Petra by Night. The program includes a candlelit visit to the Rose-Red City of Petra. The special atmosphere of the ancient Nabataean trading city comes to life as you stroll through the mysterious Siq. At the Treasury, traditional music and storytelling recreate the experience of the ancient traders who once passed through this remarkable city. The excursion departs from the Petra Visitors Center at 20:30 and returns around 22:30.
Today, you have the entire day to explore the Red Rose City of Petra. We will set out in the morning to visit the ancient site of Petra via the "Back Door." Pleasant trails descend through Wadi Ghurab, surrounded by sandstone mountains that guard the approaches to Petra. This route follows an ancient Nabataean path out of the valley, skirting the final mountain along a natural rock terrace that has been improved for the safety of walkers. The path narrows slightly before reaching a hidden plateau high above the impressive chasm of Wadi Siyyagh. Just beyond, carved into the cliff face, the Monastery suddenly comes into view. Nabataean steps then lead down into the heart of ancient Petra.
Our guide will provide a brief history of the city. You will also see Pharaoh's Castle, the Triumphal Arch, and the Amphitheater before exiting past the Treasury and through the famous Petra Siq to the shops, cafés, and hotels of Wadi Musa. (Breakfast & dinner included)
We then return to the asphalt and drive to the desert of Wadi Rum, the wild desert landscape that fascinated the British liaison officer Lawrence of Arabia. Describing Wadi Rum as "vast, echoing and god-like," we believe he could not have said it better. We will drive for three hours in a 4-wheel drive Jeep through the desert to see Lawrence's Spring. We will pass majestic mountains and explore a gorge with ancient rock drawings. You will have free time to hike on your own, enjoying the silence of this magnificent desert. Transfer to your camp, where you will spend an unforgettable night under a blanket of stars and enjoy a BBQ dinner in a traditional Bedouin tent. (Breakfast & dinner included)
Your 8-day private Jordan tour concludes with a transfer to Queen Alia International Airport for your departure. Our English-speaking representative will assist you at the airport to ensure a smooth departure. (Breakfast included)
